Ron Battani is a graduate of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, BME 1967 and MME 1973. Ron taught high school band for 18 years in Iowa, 17 years in Texas and middle school band 9 years in Nevada. In 1976-77 he was adjunct director of the Iowa State University Jazz Ensemble, Ames, Iowa. In 1976 his Des Moines Hoover Jazz Band won Downbeat Magazines National “Maynard Ferguson Sound Alike” contest. His Hoover Concert Band twice won first place large school class and the sweepstakes award at the Drake Relays/Adventureland concert band competition in Des Moines, Iowa. At Anderson High School in Austin, Texas his Honors Band was twice chosen outstanding concert band at the Contraband Days Band

Matt Stofferahn is originally from southern California but grew up in Henderson, Nevada. After graduating from Green Valley High School, he majored in composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music where he was named outstanding graduate at the Bachelor’s level. Matt later enrolled in medical school at Johns Hopkins University and specialized in emergency medicine and internal medicine. He currently works in the Valley Health System hospitals. He has been playing trombone with the Henderson Symphony Orchestra intermittently since 1999 and also plays euphonium with the Desert Winds. His compositions have been played by the USC Thornton Symphony and Hopkins Symphony Orchestra.

Duane Zook grew up in Southern California and took up the trumpet in the 6th grade. Switched to playing the trombone in 10th grade. In 1992 moved to Henderson NV and joined the Henderson Symphony the same year. I enlisted in the US Army after high school and served 4 years on active duty. Upon completion of active duty served in the California National Guard, US Army Reserve, and the Nevada National Guard retiring in 1998. Graduated from Cal State University, Los Angeles with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1991. Received my MBA from UNLV in 1999. Starting my 21st year working at MGM Resorts and currently working as the CityCenter Controller for Construction Accounting.

Emily Montoya

Harpist

Emily Montoya, harpist, received her Bachelors of Music in Harp Performance from Manhattan School of Music under the instruction of Deborah Hoffman. In addition to her active freelance schedule, she currently holds the position of principal harp with the Boise Philharmonic and the Henderson Symphony. Before moving to Las Vegas, she played with the El Paso and Las Cruces Symphonies. She has also performed with the new music ensemble TACTUS, and as part of an internationally touring flute and harp duo. This spring she performed in the premier of Ukrainian composer Virko Baley’s opera Holodomor, as well as the premier of The Music Box, a ballet by Beth Mehocic which calls for the harpist to interact with the dancers. In addition to performing and teaching in the greater Las Vegas area, Emily has been chosen as the bi-annual adjudicator for harp at the Las Vegas Junior Festival.
